British Ecological Society
The BES is the world’s oldest environmental society, and wanted a digital presence to help it stay relevant in the 21st century. As part of a team from Alex Barker Consulting, I helped deliver a new website, created with UX principles, research and design.
The work
Phase 1: discovery
We carried out user research to establish who the BES’ audiences were and what they wanted. Working with Good Eggs, the BES’ brand agency, we helped define and refine the branding, and used this to recommend how the new site should serve its audiences.
Phase 2: alpha
Then we used the evidence gathered from phase 1 to build a new information architecture. I wrote every piece of copy in the test site, which we then tested with users and modified according to their opinions.
Phase 3: live content creation
The BES commissioned me to write several pieces of launch content for the new site, specifically for two new audience types they hadn’t catered to before – corporates and the general public. One of the stories is the top result on Google and ChatGPT for the search term ‘guide to biodiversity credits.’
